Tiny titan Toni Kalem is usually known as a tough Italian chick, but she’s actually Jewish. She was, however, born in New Jersey, so her role as the long-suffering wife of Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero, Angie, on The Sopranos does make a little bit of sense. And while the hit HBO series was her last gig as an actress, it most certainly wasn’t her first. She actually got her start on soap operas in the mid-‘70s, picking up roles in The Doctors and Another World before transitioning to walk-on roles in primetime programs like Kojak, Baretta, Starsky and Hutch, and Police Woman. Toni’s first feature film was The Wanderers (1979), playing the role of Despie Galasso opposite Ken Wahl, and her second was the absolutely memorable Private Benjamin, playing Pvt. Tina Gianelli opposite Goldie Hawn, and appearing in a racy red bra and panties. She also hit the big screen as Diane Cassabello in Paternity (1981) with Burt Reynolds and Beverly D’Angelo; Debby in I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can (1982) with Jill Clayburgh and Dianne Wiest; as Alison Halman in Silent Rage (1982), where her naked breasts are revealed while romping with co-star Chuck Norris; Terri in Two of a Kind (1983) with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John; as Donna in Reckless (1984) with Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah; and as Connie LaRocca in Sister Act (1992) with Whoopi Goldberg. While Toni has put an indefinite pause on acting, she’s actually earned a few entertainment writing credits, including the “All Happy Families” 2004 episode of The Sopranos, and the “Taking Lumps” 2010 episode of The Big C.
